New Houghton

New Houghton is a former mining community situated within the parish of Pleasley. The village has a range of housing with two distinct areas of terraced properties on either side of the Millennium Green.

Designed in long rows on either side of a narrow street, the terraces consist of a mix of private and public owned housing. The properties suffered from a poor environment and required upgrading to enable them to meet contemporary needs.

Progress

Work is almost complete to the refurbishment of 110 privately owned properties in New Houghton.  Work commenced on January 5th 2009 with properties off Crompton Street first.

A site office was been established on the industrial estate off Crompton Street, and during the contract respite facilities were made available there for residents who had work carried out to their properties.

The contractors, Frank Haslam Milan appointed a Resident Liaison Officer, Debra Ashton, to liaise with residents on the use of the respite facilities as well as all aspects of the works on a day to day basis.

A base was also available on site to the local Neighbourhood Police Team during the refurbishment project.

Joint funded by MVMP and Bolsover District Council, the 12 month refurbishment  programme on properties in Verney Street, Portland Street and Crompton Street began in January 2009 and includes re-roofing, replacing windows, doors, paths and fencing, new kitchens and bathrooms, and electrical rewiring.

Originally designed in long rows on either side of a narrow street, the New Houghton terraces have suffered in the past from a poor environment and neglect, but properties are being modernised to high standards.
